Can you believe it? We made it to the last week of Semester 1! It has been an extraordinary first semester at the middle school. Last week was a week full of collaboration and arts. HUGE thank you to every single one of you that made it a wonderful celebration of talent and achievement. Viewing the music performances, art walk, and Annie Jr., will remain a
highlight of my year!

None of it would have been possible without the leadership of Ms. Limkeman, Ms. Wilkins, Mr. Dingle, Ms. Sinitskaia, Ms. Henry, and Mr. Cour! Thank you for all the extra hours you put in to make it a successful Winter Arts Day.

C week

Hello, Dragons! We have a big week coming up, please read carefully…

Lockers:
Heads up- we will be conducting a random locker check in the next 2 weeks. If you have any items you don’t want thrown out (food), please get rid of them as soon as possible. We will throw away any food that we find.

Cold Weather:

You may have now noticed how cold the hallways are during winter months. If you are feeling the cold, it is your responsibility to dress accordingly, in the appropriate uniform pieces. Girls, I highly suggest that you start to wear tights, if you haven’t already. You can also order a pair of khaki pants for casual day.

On formal Monday, please wear your vest, cardigan, and/or formal jacket to keep warm. You should not be wearing your grey KIS hoodie (this is not a part of the formal uniform).

Also, if you see a door open, help keep the school warm by closing it. The doors don’t automatically shut on their own, try to be conscious of closing them behind you. We appreciate the help!

Water stations:
Thank you to everyone that has transitioned to bring a water bottle to school. If you forget, you can buy water in the deli.

PSA (Public Service Announcement) on behalf of everyone at KIS: Do not put your mouth anywhere near the water dispensers to get water. Thank you!

Winter Break

I would like to end this week’s bulletin by reminding you that we only have 3 more weeks until winter break! The next three weeks will be full of assessments, performances, athletics, and closing activities. Don’t forget to take care of yourself during this busy time. It’s important that you’re getting enough sleep, making to-do lists, prioritizing your time, eating well, and listening to your body. We are all here for you, if you find yourself struggling, talk to your advisor, a teacher, Ms. Martin, or any adult that you trust in the building. You can do this!

I watched an inspiring video tonight, and I couldn’t wait to share it with all of you. Try to keep Soar in mind if you feel defeated or wanting to give up. Don’t let failure stop you from trying. Think about how you can persevere, like the two kids in this film. If you watched the short video, tell me what you think by clicking here! *Your response will be seen by everyone that submits a response.

See you tomorrow! :)

A week

Hello, awesome students! Congratulations to all of our athletes for an exciting weekend full of accomplishments. I hope you had some time to relax today, in between studying for Korean exams and/or doing homework. Thanks to Ms. Grayson, we had a wonderful performance on Friday. Ms. Karen Golden told interactive and fun stories to make us laugh and wonder. Don’t forget her request to all of you, which was to pass on her stories to others. Our stories can be our most precious gifts! I challenge each of you to tell 1 story to a teacher or staff member this week.

Korean Tests:

As most of you already know, Korean tests will be held this week during KIS- Reads and Advisory, on Tuesday and Wednesday. Testing will run from 8:25-9:10, meaning that the first block on those days will start about 15 minutes late, at 9:15. Students who do not take the exams will need to report to the library during both sessions.

Uniform Fun:

As we transition into winter uniforms, you may be wondering: why do we ask our students to dress up at all?

Mr. Limkeman recently shared a research study with me, which suggests that if you dress for success, you will actually perform better!

The example given is people wearing a white coat and being told that it was either:

  • a doctor's coat OR

  • a painter's coat

As you might imagine, the people who wore the "doctor's coat" performed better on the task at hand. Which suggests both that dressing for success is important AND it matters even more if you believe that you are dressing professionally!

Click here to discover the strange ways the clothes you wear affect the thoughts you think.

So, if you ever wondered why we have our students wear uniforms, maybe now you understand a little better.

D week

Another week, another bulletin! Please take a few minutes to read the items below. Do you want to get more involved outside of the classroom? If so, pay attention to the opportunities coming up!

Crewneck Confusion:

Last week I reminded students that the KIS polo needs to be worn under the navy blue crewneck sweatshirt. I think this surprised some people, and they didn’t think it was important. I want to bring it up again, because it is important. The KIS polo is an essential part of our uniform and needs to be worn on casual days. If you are cold and want to wear the crewneck over your polo, we are allowing that. But, you still need to be wearing your polo under. Come see me or your advisor, if you have questions. *Photo coming soon.

Season 1 Sports Celebration:

Season 1 athletes and coaches will be recognized on Monday morning during a MS assembly in the PAC. Signups for season 2 sports will be coming out Monday afternoon. On Friday, we invite all Season 1 athletes to wear their team shirt/jersey with jeans. All other students should be in their regular casual uniform.

Interested in robotics?

Registration for the KIS Robotics Team will start November 14th at 7:00pm. The first 18 students to register will be considered for the team. There is a 50,000 won fee for each student. A link will be sent to students for registration. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Corton, via email or in room 301. If you’re not so sure why to join, or what robotics is about, check out this video!

C week

Hello, Dragons! Only a couple quick reminders and announcements from me this week. Hope you enjoyed the gorgeous fall-like weather this weekend!

Uniform Pieces:

I would like to share with you a list of “other" uniform pieces that are approved for casual day.

    • KIS grey hoodie zip up jacket

    • KIS navy blue crew neck sweatshirt
      • KIS polo needs to be worn under the sweatshirt
    • KIS navy blue dry fit athletic jacket

    • KIS letterman jacket

On formal days, there is no need for you to be wearing a sweatshirt/hoodie. If you are cold, come prepared wearing your formal vest, cardigan, or jacket.

Notes from StuCo:

StuCo is having our first Spirit Day of the year. Wednesday, November 9th is Twin's Day. Dress identical to someone in middle school or multiple people if you want to be a triplet or quadruplet. Make sure it is school appropriate and if you are not matching someone you will need to wear your KIS uniform.

English Speakers of the Week: All winners of this award please meet at 12:25 on Monday by the MS Office. We want to make sure we have your picture and get you a t-shirt that you earned for using the connecting language in school.

B week
Welcome back, DRAGONS! I hope you all had a relaxing, fun, and rejuvenating break.

Tomorrow is the first official day of winter formals. Go through the checklist I shared before break, and the list below, to ensure you are DRESSED FOR SUCCESS! I am looking forward to seeing you all look sharp in your ties.

Before you close out, click here to answer a quick question for me.
This may seem like a really easy question, but try to think about it for longer than 10 seconds. Please remember your digital citizenship lessons and rules when responding. Teachers are invited to respond too. I’m excited to read your thoughts. The responses will be shared out in the coming weeks.

Have a great week!

A week
First quarter is complete! This is our last week before we leave for Fall break, play close attention, lots of important reminders below...

Mac Updates:
Remember do not update to macOS Sierra. It is important you follow these directions. If you update the operating system, the IT department can not help fix your problems! This means you will have to find a way to take your computer to an AppleCare center.

After Fall Break we will be switching over to the winter uniform. Click here for a winter uniform checklist. Girls and boys will be required to wear ties on Monday. Take time over fall break to find your uniform pieces, and order anything that you are missing. We will start to require winter formals starting Monday, October 31 (after fall break). You are responsible to replace anything that is lost or that doesn’t fit.

Water Bottles:
Another reminder to bring a water bottle to school. Do not use shared cups left on the water filter. This is a BAD idea, and will lead to the spreading of germs.

STAR Students:
For the rest of the school year, STAR students have permission to wear their Dragons t-shirt and jeans on Friday. This is only for STAR student recipients. This Friday, STAR Students should wear their casual uniform to school for advisory conferences.

Parents Weekend/Fall Festival Updates:
Thanks to the MS Student Council we have a fun filled event coming up. See Ms. Swanson’s email for more details.

Raffle Tickets
Starting on Monday through Wednesday from 8:10-8:25 only, please bring money for Fall Festival raffle tickets.
